What is ZoneBlocking

The Carolina Panthers are going to incorporate “zone blocking schemes” this coming football season and the main question is this, What in the hell is zone blocking and how is it going to help our team win the super bowl. ??

What is zone blocking?

It’s a scheme used by American football teams to give both the quarterback and the the running back time and proctection to make running plays. Last year the team was plugged by chances of having all the holes that they had plugged by opposing teams. You saw it poor deshaun foster was stopped at almost all instances. Teams that were 10-6 were the ones that got to the playoffs. Its going to be amazing especially with fire squad “new or lean saints” in the mix with their powerful offense that will be shooting guns all over the NFC. It should be an interesting mix that will proof to be tough for teams in this market.

Well the change that you are going to see most is that co ordination and technique are going to matter more than muscle in trying to create holes as defensive linemen are often double teamed.

Why is it so popular ?

The cool thing about it is that zone blocking rules don’t change based on the defensive front. Compared to the “one man block” system a change from the defending team i.e stunting or blitzing rules change so players require to learn multiple rules for the same play. Here comes the cool part about zone blocking, THE DAMN RULES STAY CONSISTENT.

So the poor panthers have to change this season as more often than not, last season their undersized linemen were constantly overpowered by opposing defensive linemen. With the Carolina panthers having more athletic linemen we can all expect to see more yardage on short yardage situations as they were constantly overpowered.

So whats so special about zone blocking and how do they do it?

They use the following techniques

1. zone right – this supports plays supposed to be run to the right of the center where as the ball is snapped each offensive lineman moves his right foot about six inches at a 45 degree angle away from his body to the right, followed by his second step with his left foot which puts the lineman on track. Once on track he seeks to block any defender on his track. So where does poor de angelo Williams or deshaun foster go with this, he can choose to open whatever hole was opened or improvise choosing whatever hole that has been opened.
2. Zone left – This is basically everything above but mirrored to the left. J

The more panthers get better at this the more they are going to be able to do, which is really cool cause they can double team on trouble some defenders.

The receiver can also be used to block and further improve the lane. Anyone remember that game in Atlanta, where the poor falcons couldn’t stop De angelo Williams. OH YEAH.
